Program Course Description:

This Paralegal course is a self-paced, online course with the chief goal of providing students with the legal knowledge and practical skills essential to becoming proficient, ethical paralegals. Individuals are prepared for working under the supervision of an attorney performing a broad variety of legal tasks. Students will learn about the paralegal profession, present and future. The program teaches students about U.S. law and law specialties, including pleadings, formats, and citations. Other areas covered will include a formal introduction to law and the history of American law, the court system, and substantive law. Legal terminology and skills involving civil litigation and legal analysis and writing will help prepare the student for the challenge of today’s paralegal.

Students will become familiar with the up-and-coming computer programs and software as they relate to the law office, as well as an introduction to computer-assisted legal research. This course will provide a solid foundation for the successful future paralegal/legal assistant.

Program graduates will be employable by law firms, attorneys, court systems, and other businesses requiring legal services.

Upon completion of the Paralegal program, graduates will be able to build a Cybrary, cite legal documents, file reports, and overcome transcription problems. Additionally, they will also know English grammar and proper transcription techniques.

Business Law: 30 Hours

This course is designed to familiarize business executives with the types of legal problems that occur in society, in general, and in the business world, in particular. Various areas of law will be reviewed including Contracts, Sales, Agency, and Government Regulation of labor and business. Ethical considerations regarding the application of the principles studied will also be examined.

Business Math: 30 Hours

The Business Math course is designed to introduce students to helpful tools that will enable them to perform quick, easy, and accurate basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Office Procedures Level 1: 30 Hours

This course teaches introductory office procedures and practices to the novice office worker. It consists of six Lessons and a Final Exam. Each Lesson is divided into Sections with related Tasks. There are questions at the end of each Lesson designed to reinforce the concepts the student has learned in the Lesson.

Office Procedures Level 2: 30 Hours

This course covers a variety of topics as it simulates an office environment and challenges students with tasks that they would typically perform. This course consists of six Lessons and a Final Exam. Each Lesson is divided into Sections with related Tasks. There are questions at the end of each Lesson designed to reinforce the concepts the student has learned in the Lesson.

Legal Transcription: 87 Hours

The Legal Transcription program is a self-paced, online program providing students with general legal knowledge and practical skills vital to becoming proficient legal transcriptionists. Individuals are prepared for working in a law firm or legal office, a service providing legal transcription, or as a freelance legal transcriptionist from their own home office. Areas covered will include an introduction to law in the United States and the court systems. Students will also learn legal terminology, specifically as it relates to a legal specialty. As well, major legal specialties will be discussed including criminal law, family law, and contracts to name a few.

Further, students will transcribe approximately 20 hours of business and law documents to build their skills in formatting of documents. They will be provided with all materials necessary to complete this including voice files on USB flash drive, an Infinity foot pedal, and a headset.

The program will provide a solid foundation for the successful future legal transcriptionist.

A paralegal career is a good fit for those interested in grammar, legal terminology, typing, listening, analyzing data, researching, writing documents, and continual learning.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for paralegals and legal assistants was $46,680 a year in 2010. Paralegals are employed in various organizations, such as
