Program Details

Whether you've experienced recovery from addiction, mental illness, or co-occurring substance and mental disorders, becoming a Peer Support Specialist may be a great option for you.

In this course, you'll gain an understanding of the roles of Peer Specialists and Peer Supporters related to advocacy, addressing stigma and discrimination, and promoting wellness and community reintegration.

You'll get an overview of mental health and substance use disorders, as well as the ethical responsibilities and legal issues related to peer support. That includes HIPAA, cultural competence, personal boundaries, and confidentiality.

We'll help you gain insight into successful interpersonal communication and adult education techniques. You'll learn to empower and help others with the use of videos portraying stories of peers in recovery from mental illness and/or addiction throughout the coursework.

Peer support training opens the door to new career opportunities in an in-demand field, allows you to positively affect the lives of others, and helps you improve their odds of beating addiction. You can be a role model for others and show them that it is possible to achieve recovery.

This course includes content and standards promoted by the National Association of Peer Supporters (NAPS, formerly known as the International Association of Peer Supporters). It may be accepted by state certification boards that provide credentials for Recovery Peer Specialists or Peer Supporters. You should check with your state certification or regulatory body for more information on local requirements.
