Program Details

In this online, self-paced program, you'll prepare to sit for the NAHUC certification exam and begin a career as a health unit coordinator at a hospital, medical office, or other health care facility.

Before you begin the HUC curriculum, you'll tackle our Medical Terminology course to facilitate communication with patients and medical professionals. You'll learn not only medical terms themselves, but also their application. You'll discover how to recognize prefixes and suffixes used in medical terminology so it's easy to interpret unfamiliar terminology.

As you become familiar with the terminology, you'll learn about the body as a whole, the function of each organ system, and how to differentiate cells, tissues, organs, systems, and cavities.

Once you have the lingo, we'll introduce you to the history of medicine and the health unit coordination role. You'll learn the importance of confidentiality and patient rights and responsibilities, discover how to promote a healthy environment, and become familiar with safety issues.

We'll discuss the legal and ethical considerations of a career in healthcare and walk you through the communication and professional skills you need for success in an office environment.

We'll cover the practicalities of patient records and common processes like admissions, transfers, and discharges. You'll gain knowledge of supplies and service management, and you'll have the opportunity to practice applying critical thinking, medical terminology, and the transcription of orders.

Upon completion of this program, you'll be prepared to sit for the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators (NAHUC) certification exam, using the voucher we'll provide to cover the cost.
