What is medical transcription? Medical transcription involves trained personnel that accurately type or transcribe recorded medical dictations. These recorded materials include reports, notes, letters, evaluations, and summaries coming from the encounters from a health care provider and a patient – this may include laboratory reports, doctor recommendations, consultation notes and more. Is medical transcription one of those scam work from home jobs? Unfortunately, there are a lot of “work from home” jobs that are SCAMS out there. You don’t have to worry because medical transcription is not one of them. Currently, there are more than one hundred thousand medical transcriptionists in the USA today (with the demand still rising). Aside from the many who are working from home there are also those who are employed in hospital facilities, doctor offices, self employed and transcription service companies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical transcriptionists is expected to grow 6 percent from 2010 to 2020, slower than the average for all occupations. Why do a lot of people choose to work from home? Depending on your skill, experience and sometimes your professional accreditation/association, you get paid differently depending on where you work. Working as a “self employed” or “connecting with a “transcription service companies” are the two ways you can work as a medical transcriptionist from home. You may start out working $10-15 per hour as a starter (sometimes the salary is per line) and rise up to $15-40 working from home as a self employed but of course you would have to deal with your own taxes, connect with your own clients. Medical transcription provider companies would have to pay 7.5% of the FICA tax , may set the your pay rate and your work load, but they can also provide you with all equipment you need. Some providers set specific quotas and sometime specific work time schedule. More people are choosing to be self employed because they can control their schedules, be flexible with their tasks, and set their pay rate. Most people that I know who do this are usually work at home mommies. When the kids are at school, they work as medical transcriptionists.
