WavePlayer Foot Pedal Device:
Meditec.com is a reseller of the Bytescribe WavePlayer and does not provide direct technical support for this device or for the software bundled with it. For complete technical support details, please refer to the following website:

ALSO NOTE: Bytescribe only supports PC-based computer platforms for this hardware and software -- MAC users should refer to the ByteScribe.com FAQs before ordering:
Will WavPlayer run on a MAC?
NOTICE REGARDING "DocShuttle":
Meditec.com bundles the Bytescribe WavePlayer Foot Pedal transcription device with the Medical and Legal Transcription Courses. When you order this device from Meditec.com, there will be a sticker on the box which instructs the user NOT to install the DocShuttle Program. The reason for this recommendation is fairly straight-forward: DocShuttle is not required for use with Meditec's transcription courses, and MAY cause other technical issues or problems for the user if it installed. Meditec's transcription materials are provided on separate CD-ROM disks, and the only function required for the Bytescribe Footpedal is the base device driver and media player file-type support (CODECS for the audio file types used on the CDs).
IF you require the DocShuttle Program, you are certainly free to install it, but please be aware that if DocShuttle is installed, and this creates technical issues related to your transcription training course, Meditec.com will not provide technical support to address these issues. If you have already installed DocShuttle, and you are experiencing problems, our only recommendation is that you uninstall the DocShuttle program.
PURPOSE OF THE BYTESCRIBE WavePlayer:
The purpose of this foot pedal device, is simply to allow you to control the playback of the recorded dictation (with your foot), while keeping your hands free (on the keyboard) to type.
If you are familiar with playing audio or video content on your computer, you should have no problems using the Bytescribe control software. The Bytescribe control software allows you to browse your computer folder/directories (including your CD-ROM drive) just as you would with any other Windows-based media player. The difference is, with the Bytescribe control software, you have the ability to alter the playback speed, and you have the ability to Fastforward, Play, and Rewind, using the three foot-pedal controls.
OTHER SOFTWARE IS REQUIRED FOR TRANSCRIPTION: The Bytescribe foot pedal device is only used for playback of digitally-recorded materials (audio files). The Bytescribe device does NOT come bundled with a word processor or editor with which to create the transcribed files. The student/employee is required to have/purchase any/all of the necessary software programs that may be needed for the production of the transcribed materials, including but not limited to, a word processor, medical or legal dictionary or spell checkers, printer, etc.
In order to complete the Meditec transcription training programs, a student can use virtually any simple text editor, including those which are free (bundled with Windows), however, most employers will require the use of either Microsoft Word, Corel Word Perfect or some other commercial editor. The cost of acquiring such software applications and/or the cost of training involved in their use, is always the responsibility of the student/employee, and is outside the scope of Meditec's training courses. Meditec.com assumes that the student understands the basic concepts of word processing and is familiar with the use of at least one of the commercially available word processing applications.
MEDIA FORMAT (FILE-TYPE) ASSOCIATIONS:
Whether you are playing a commercial audio music CD, a DVD movie, or any of a number of other compressed audio/vido file formats, your Media Player utilizes what are known as CODECS, which are simply "interpreters" for the various file type definitions used to digitally record audio/video content. Many of these formats are proprietary, which means the file may only be "interpreted" by a specific brand or manufacturer's media player. The Bytescribe software has licenses with the manufacturers and copyright holders of many different file format specifications, and is therefore able to "interpret" a wide variety of digial audio/video formats.
The medical and legal dictation which is provided with Meditec's Medical and Legal Transcription courses, uses two primary formats: MP3 and WAV. Both of these formats are supported by the Bytescribe software, but are also supported on various other media players that are typically found on most PCs. For example, the content of Meditec's dictation CDs could be played using Microsoft's Windows Media Player, Apple's QuickTime Player, or the Real Network's REAL Player, just to name a few.
If you use one or more of these other commercial media players on your computer, you may find that simply DOUBLE-CLICKING on the content from the Meditec CDs, will cause the files to open in one of these other media players, because the MP3 or WAV "file-types" have been associated with one or more of these other players. NOT TO WORRY. You can either reassign the file-type associations for MP3 and WAV to your Bytescribe application, or simply run the Bytescribe application and manually open the files on the dictation CDs through the "File | Open" menu, as opposed to double-clicking on the filenames.
If you need help understanding or re-associating file types in Windows XP, please refer to the following Microsoft support page: How to change file associations in Windows XP.
If you need help understanding or re-associating file types in Windows Vista, please refer to the following Microsoft support page: Default Programs.
Digital Sound Support - "SoundBlaster Compatible" Device In order to playback digital sound recordings, your computer must have a "SoundBlaster Compatible" Sound Card installed. For more information on this requirement, see our Digital Transcription Help File.
USB or Serial Port Foot Pedals: The Bytescribe WavePlayer can be purchased in either USB or Serial Port versions. There is no difference in function between the two types, but they differ only in how they are connected to your PC. The USB version is generally considered to be easier to install, simply because USB devices are generally easier for the Windows operating system to detect and configure. The Serial Port version will require the user to define which "COM PORT" the device is using, and will require the user to perform the installation and configuration of the device driver (which may otherwise be performed automatically by Windows for the USB device). Bytescribe provides technical support for all installation issues.
Meditec will generally ship the USB-based foot pedal with its courses, but the user may elect to receive either the USB or Serial version.
NOTE: There may be instances where a serial-based device will be required by certain employers -- i.e., where (as a transcriptionist) you will need your devices to interconnect with an employer's equipment or proprietary dictation programs, and that equipment or program may not be compatible with USB devices. In other circumstances, a transcriptionist may be required to use or purchase other special or proprietary equipment in order to interact with the employer's own dictation system.
In the event that an employer may require Serial vs. USB devices, or may require other special or proprietary hardware or software, it is always the student's/employee's responsibility to purchase the equipment needed, if it is not provided by the employer. Meditec.com makes no guarantee or warranty that the Bytescribe foot pedal device will suffice to meet all of the needs of a transcriptionist in all work/employer environments, whether now or in the future.
