Medical billing software programs range in price from a few hundred dollars, to many millions of dollars, depending upon their level of sophistication or customization and/or the number of records they are designed to handle or the number of users that will be needed to operate the system. Medical billing and practice management system platforms range from PC (personal computer) based, to mid-range Unix/Linux platforms, all the way up to main-frame computers.

Once you go to work for a doctor or hospital billing department, the likelyhood is that you will need additional training on the specific system/s being used within that organization, but the more familiar you become with the basic processes and functions of standard billing systems, the faster you will be able to adapt and get "up to speed" with those customized systems.
