Program Course Description:
The Legal Transcription program is designed to prepare individuals for employment as legal transcriptionists, legal word processors, or legal transcribers. Program graduates will be employable by law firms, attorneys, court systems, and other businesses requiring legal services. The program teaches the students fundamentals of law, legal ethics, and law specialties
Legal transcriptionists transcribe legal dictation creating legal documents for attorneys and other entities. A legal transcriptionist must have a good command of legal terminology and how different documents are formatted. It is well suited to working from home since the files can easily be moved electronically. This program will review the topics essential to performing legal transcription work.
Upon completion of the Legal Transcription program, graduates can overcome transcription problems, such as inaudible dictation, background noise, and accents. Additionally, they will understand English grammar, rules for report filing, and proper transcription techniques.
Program Course List and Course Descriptions:
Business Law: 30 Hours
This course is designed to familiarize business executives with the types of legal problems that occur in society, in general, and in the business world, in particular. Various areas of law will be reviewed including Contracts, Sales, Agency, and Government Regulation of labor and business. Ethical considerations regarding the application of the principles studied will also be examined.
Legal Transcription: 87 Hours
The Legal Transcription program is a self-paced, online program providing students with general legal knowledge and practical skills vital to becoming proficient legal transcriptionists. Individuals are prepared for working in a law firm or legal office, a service providing legal transcription, or as a freelance legal transcriptionist from their own home office. Areas covered will include an introduction to law in the United States and the court systems. Students will also learn legal terminology, specifically as it relates to a legal specialty. As well, major legal specialties will be discussed including criminal law, family law, and contracts to name a few.
Further, students will transcribe approximately 20 hours of business and law documents to build their skills in formatting of documents. They will be provided with all materials necessary to complete this including voice files on USB flash drive, an Infinity foot pedal, and a headset.
The program will provide a solid foundation for the successful future legal transcriptionist.

A legal transcription and legal word processor careers are a good fit for those interested in newer fields, grammar, legal terminology, working from home, typing, and listening. Since legal transcription is a newer career path, it is not tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics yet. According to Payscale, legal word processors or legal transcribers earn about $40,000 to $50,000 a year on average and many work from home, while some are freelancers. Legal transcriptionists are employed in various organizations, such as

Businesses require accurate legal records, so they hire employees to accurately transcribe and edit these documents. Employers highly values people with a good understanding of legal terminology, good grammar skills, and fast typing skills. As the new field continues to gain in popularity, the need for legal transcriptionists will continue to grow.
