Medical transcriptionists need good tools to do their work efficiently. Some great tools of the trade are below and work well for just about any specialty that you may be transcribing.
Stedman's medical spellchecker- Most MTs wouldn't type a report without this product. It's the top of the line.
Stedman's medical dictionary on CD- The CD versions are so much nicer as they have expanded and enhanced search features.
Stedman's Quick Look Drug book on CD- This is a wonderful drug book on CD and is updated yearly.
Stedman's Medical Terms and Phrases- This book is wonderful for both new and older MTs alike. If you hear part of a phrase, you can look up what you hear, and then see many different common medical phrases including your words. At first, I balked at such a reference. I figured that the chances the phrase I was looking for would be there would be slim. I was wrong. I use this book all time when transcribing.
Stedman's has a variety of word books and I would recommend having the specialty(s) that you transcribe on hand in electronic format.
Sloane's Medical Word book- This book is GREAT for MT students and very new MTs. It's a multispecialty book w/ a lab values chart too.
Any laboratory test handbook w/ lab values is great to have on hand.
Style Guide: The AAMT Book of Style is a good book to have on hand. The 2nd edition can be found used on Amazon.com. The newest edition only have 4 changes and was rearranged.
Word Expander program- I recommend Ditto, Bytescribe's Swift Text, or Abbreviate! All three are very well priced around $50 and work well. Ditto having the most features.
On our www.meditec.com website we offer many of the Stedman's products where you can receive a 10% discount from ordering through us.
I'm asked frequently by new students, what cool products are out there for MT students? My answer is that if you are a Meditec student, you don't need anything else. However, this answer usually does not satisfy an eager student who is excited about their new profession and that wants to do "extra" study. Some people like extra and additional learning tools. Some of my personal favorites are as follows:
-Sloane's Medical Word (as noted above)
-Anatomy Coloring book by Kapit (can be found on Amazon.com for a few dollars used). Most people don't "finish" coloring this book but it's really fun and does assist in retaining anatomy information.
-Medical Terminology Flash cards- www.vis-ed.com. I love this set! You can get 1,000 cards for about $14. They contain most of the terminology used in the Meditec course.
-Lil Red Notebook- An electronic notebook, which is well priced and very cool. MTs usually have tons of sticky notes all over their computer because they find a new word and write it down. With this handy little notebook program, it's all at your fingertips. Around $20. Comes with a FREE trial.
-My Word Book- This is similar to the Lil Red Notebook and can be found here: http://www.mywordbook.com/.
-Medical Transcription Techniques and Procedures by Diehl- This is a great book for an MT student. It reinforces what is already taught in the Meditec course and comes with a CD. I suggest buying the older (5th) edition used on Amazon.com as the book is a bit pricey, but used around $10-$15 or less.
-Quick Study laminated Anatomy charts- I just love these darn things! When I was an MT Student I had a large Anatomy wall chart hanging on the wall next to my computer. These are not expensive and are a great quick reference. About $8.95 for the large laminated anatomy wall chart.
-Medical Transcription Guide: Do's and Don'ts. I believe this is by Diehl. Can be found on Amazon.com used. Make sure you get a current version. This book is easier to understand than the AAMT Book of Style and is GREAT for MT students. However, it can't "replace" the AAMT BOS, so many people just get the BOS and don't buy this one. However, it is a handy little book w/ a lot of good information. It's basically a style guide for formatting and has many tips and tricks for MTs. This is a book good for MT students rather than a working or experienced MT.
-I love all of Laura Bryan's book- She has them about MT technology, MS Word for MTs, etc. Her stuff can be found at Stedman's site.
-Saving Keystrokes is a good book on MT productivity.
-I love Jon Knowles website and his ABCZ method for creating abbreviations for your word expander software program. I don't advise buying premade word lists, but his system is explained on his website and is free to learn. http://home.earthlink.net/~agjon/abczrule.htm
-H&P:A Nonphysician's Guide to the medical history and physical exam by Dirckx. Can be found on Amazon.com used inexpensively. This is a book written by a doctor all about the history and physical exam. It's a nice read if you want a little something extra, but not necessary.
