Employer Pays Tuition
Keep Your Staff Happy – Pay for Employee Education
Employees of small businesses have a hankering to take courses, learn more about virtually anything, aside from what fulfills their job responsiblities. Company owners ought to encourage them and pay to take the classes. The learning helps careers and, in turn, helps the business retain its best workers.
Many companies are already paying for courses that help employees upgrade skills or learn new ones. Others go further, marking tuition reimbursement a benefit that covers courses that are not even related to the job.
It is a way to value the employees and keep them. Quoting an employer in North Carolina:
“I am currently paying a staffer to take a course in law, and another is taking business writing and literature. We have 20 employees. If we lose one, we are in a tough spot. Everyone we have is hand-picked, and we want them to stay for the rest of their careers.”
Human resource professionals say that paying for employees’ courses is a great motivator and retention tool for all companies, so a small business that offers tuition reimbursement will make itself more competitive when it comes to attracting and keeping good workers.
A consultant in the industry said that research has shown one of the top reasons why workers stay with their companies is they’re learning and growing on the job. Taking courses helps that process along.
“I am a believer in paying for anything that in any way helps them be more effective on the job,” says Kaye, co-author of the book Love ‘em or Lose ‘em: Getting Good People to Stay. Kaye suggests owners take the intitiatve and offer tuition reimbursement rather than waiting for workers to request it. Workers appreciate the good will behind such offers.
And don’t presume to know what kind of course is right for a given person. Don’t assume that a graphics designer, for instance, should only be taking graphics courses.
Try to understand what challenges and motivates each individual. If somebody wants to take a course in balancing a budget (or any course that helps them feel better about themselves and their functionability), encourage them to do so.
On-site learning is simple now through the Internet; classes can be taken from work and home in a combination manner.
People want to continue to learn. If they feel they are learning, they are happy and stay on.
