Online Education

Online Education
By: Dawn Moreno, Meditec Contributor

Today’s adult learner has many responsibilities to juggle; work, home life, children, and possibly even care of elderly parents. So, if one wants to further their education or train for a new career, one of the first questions is where to find the time? Trying to allow for tuition and campus visits for classes might be pretty tough.

Many colleges and universities have started online distance learning classes and even entire distance learning programs. Additionally, schools like Meditec, have all of their vocational career courses available online or on CD and as a distinct advantage, are self-paced format. With online education, the adult learner, can log in and study at their convenience. Some may want to study late in the evening and others want to study in their free time on the weekend. With online education the adult learner has control over when and where they study and learn. This type of educational format has solved the problem of the busy adult learner. More people are going back to school to further their education and skill set, which leads to a totally new career path or expanding horizons in an existing career.

Since online education doesn’t use a school’s facilities and an instructor is able to handle a larger volume of students, it is comparatively far less expensive than traditional “in house” education. In order to compete, colleges and universities have had to adapt to online education since that’s what people want.

How do employers view online education? In the beginning when online education started, there was some reluctance of traditional employers to take it seriously. However, today, many teachers, social workers, counselors, etc., have obtained successful careers from online schools. Online vocational career education, like Meditec offers, is now viewed well by employers. Most vocational career employers want to know one thing, and that is “can you do the job?” Having said that, not ALL online schools are equal.

If you are seeking a college degree, it is very important to make sure that you choose an accredited online school. There are some “online universities” that claim you can get a degree in psychology, but since they are not accredited by a “real” accrediting agency, the degree is useless. Additionally, if you are seeking online vocational education and not a degree, it is still important to choose a good school. Schools to avoid are educational clearinghouses. These types of “schools” offer courses ranging from basket weaving to auto mechanics all through correspondence. These schools do have a place in offering people who simply want to learn something new but are not serious about seeking employment afterward. Most educational clearinghouses advertise on television and on the back of matchbook covers and every few years they change their name and reinvent themselves. If you wish to obtain career employment choose an online school that specializes in the career field that you wish to enter, check the BBB for their rating, and speak to current students and recent graduates for a recommendation on the program.

Online education offers adults the opportunity to enhance current skills or to launch into new careers in a self-paced and affordable way. There are less obstacles now standing in the way toward a better and more fulfilling career. If you are not happy in your current career, what is holding you back from changing your life using affordable and self-paced online education?

While we’re discussing enhancing knowledge, let’s talk about how affirmations may be used in the process.

Using Affirmations to Change Your Life

By Meditec Contributor, Dawn Moreno

Positive affirmations are statements of truth in advance. It’s the state you choose to live in now. The thoughts you are thinking right now are, in fact, this moment, creating your future. It is important to choose your thoughts wisely and to use your words wisely. Positive affirmations are positive statements or self-scripts that condition the subconscious mind to begin thinking in a way that is more compassionate toward you. Affirmations can help you to alter bad habits or even accomplish goals, and they can also help undo the damage caused by negative self-talk, those things that we repeatedly tell ourselves (or which others repeatedly tell us) that contribute to a negative self-image. Positive affirmations are a tool to use to begin consciously creating our lives.
Examples of positive affirmations:

I assist my body in maintaining perfect health.
I claim perfect health for my body now.
I get plenty of rest. My body likes the way I take care of it.

What Can Affirmations be Used For?

Affirmations can be used to change bad habits like smoking, overeating, unhealthy eating. Affirmations can be used to attract things you want more of in your life such as better relationships, money, jobs, etc. Affirmations can be used to change your thoughts about yourself and others. Affirmations can be used to reduce stress and your response to stress. Affirmations can be used to assist in forgiveness and releasing anger. There are many wonderful uses for affirmations, which are again, powerful statements used to reprogram negative or harmful thinking.
How to Effectively Work with Affirmations?

Take a moment to consider what negative scripts you want to change, what goals you would like to achieve, and what things you would like to attract more of into your life. Make a list of these things. Now, put the things you want to work on first at the top of your list. It is best to work with only 5 affirmations at a time for each item on your list. Word your affirmations in the present tense. For example, don’t affirm “I am going to be at peace,” but instead say “I am at peace.” Work with your affirmations several times a day but reading and repeating them aloud and even writing or typing them many times. Always repeat and/or write your affirmations at the beginning of each day and before you go to bed each night. Make 3×5 cards or use sticky notes to put your affirmations on and place around your house, car, and carry them with you. You can use your affirmations for as long as you like. It is recommended that you work with a set of 5 affirmations for at least 4-6 weeks. Repetition is the key to success. Affirmations are not miracles and they don’t work over night like magic. However, with repeated use affirmations can make a huge difference in assisting with thought reprogramming.

The woman replied, “Yes, they used to be bigger!”
This Month’s Recipe – Chili Casserole

- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 large can diced tomatoes, don’t drain
- Chili powder to taste
- 1 large can dark red kidney beans, do drain
- 1 can corn
- 2 Boxes Jiffy Corn bread mix
- Shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions: Brown the ground beef and drain. Add tomatoes, kidney beans, and seasoning (don’t add water). Simmer for 30 minutes. While it’s simmering, make 2 boxes of Jiffy Corn Bread mix. Butter a 13×9x2 inch baking dish, and pour the corn bread mix into the pan. Pour the corn bread mix into the baking dish. Add Chili on top (don’t fill too full as the cornbread will expand). Bake in oven according to the directions on the Jiffy mix. When it’s almost done cooking, sprinkle the top with 1 cup of cheddar cheese, and bake until golden brown.
